The Canadian Melting Pot

As we cheer on Canada in the Olympics, we are drawn to watching and proudly exposing our roots.  Flags fly from homes and cars displaying our heritage.  One of the wonderful things about Canada is being able to enjoy everything this nation has to offer and be able to build communities that represent the culture of our parents.  Both of my parents are from
Lithuania.
They emigrated to Canada in 1953.  They settled in Ontario, as did many other Lithuanians after the war.  In their new homeland, they built churches, schools and businesses.  I went to Lithuanian school on Saturdays, joined the choir and made many great friends with the same background.  And this wonderful opportunity is what awaits all new Canadians.  It's a wonderful thing to arrive in a new country and have these new instant friends that can help you transition to your new life.  In every large city in Canada you can find these little homes away from home. And how wonderful that other Canadians can experience the heritage of another country without leaving the country.
And so I celebrate with all Lithuanians around the world.  Congratulations Ruta for winning Gold!
