I remember-Memories of My Childhood in Canada

When the kids are out for their summer vacation, I start to reminisce about my summers past. No work, no school, no worries. Just friends, sunshine and good times. I remember making a list of all the things I wanted to do in those 60 days of freedom. I never made it past 5 on the list. There always seemed to be so much time.

I Remember....

Walking and biking everywhere. I never thought of asking my parents for a drive. How would my kids survive without our car!

Going to the corner store to buy a Screwball or a Lola. If only I could find these and ship them frozen to my home in San Diego.

Playing Kick-the-can till way past dark. Hiding in neighbours yards and garages. Can you imagine letting our kids do that?!

Having a wicked great tan. No worries about skin cancer back then.

Setting up a Kool-Aid Stand to make some extra money. 10 cents a glass.

Spending 2 weeks in Wasaga Beach at a summer camp. No parents. I made friends from all over Canada and the US and reconnected with them every year.

Swimming in Georgian Bay when it was still very, very cold.

Camping with my family at Long Point Provincial Park on the Labour Day Weekend. The official end of my summer.

Great memories....share your Canadian summer memories.

How to Know you haven't lost your Canadian Heritage

You can still call yourself Canadian when:

1. You have not exchanged eh? for huh?

2. You can hum the theme to Hockey Night in Canada.

3. You are convinced that Timmies secret ingredient is crack and you are suffering from withdrawal.

4. You still have Canadian Tire money in your wallet.

5. You are the only one still standing after 10 beers.

6. Your friend cuts his finger and you tell him to go to emergency.

7. You tell people you know someone who went to school with Wayne Gretzky or Mike Myers.

8. You know that Red Green is not 2 colours and can cite 101 uses for duct tape.

9. You ask for pop.

10.You instruct waitresses how to put gravy on fries.

My name is Elena and I AM CANADIAN!

Canada in Hollywood

Canada has long been a backdrop for many Hollywood Movies. I know I enjoy seeing my city as the backdrop for many of the Biggest Blockbuster films of the past 3 decades. Toronto, in our case, has been New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and pretty much every other major metropolis in the world, real and fictitious. Canadians, especially living abroad, get a kick out of pointing at the screen and exclaiming to anyone who'll listen "Hey that isn't 5th Avenue New York, that's Young and Dundas in Toronto up the street from where I grew up! Share your hometown Hollywood moments. Jennifer from California passed on this little bit of Canadiana. In the movie "Road to Perdition", there is a diner scene between Mike Sullivan and Maguire, where there can be seen a bottle of HP Sauce on Sullivan's table. HP Sauce is a brand made in the United Kingdom and available in Canada.
